The Blockchain Event

The advent of blockchain technology is fuelling innovation across the globe, within a multitude of business sectors including finance, legal and the life sciences.

Crypto Valley (Zug, Switzerland) is rapidly becoming a global hub for blockchain activity. The Swiss Canton continues to attract companies from across the globe, promoting an ever expanding community of blockchain professionals.

Ethereum's blockchain and smart contracts and IOTA’s unique Internet of Things toolset offer almost limitless scope to codify all manner of processes within the enterprise. This event is an opportunity for teams to explore this technology, with access to data, cutting-edge tools and guidance & support from Ethereum, IOTA, academics and industry professionals.

Participants will also have the opportunity to meet and compete with the
London HackETHon winners.

The Challenges

Financial Services Applications:

Fighting fraud in the supply chain

Blockchain technology offers promising potential to reduce international/domestic trade fraud through its immutability and identification features. Teams will explore how these might be applied in practice, with the option to include Thomson Reuters data in their solution.

Non-Financial Applications:

Exploring the intersection of Blockchain and IoT

Machine-to-Machine transactions as well as the distribution of device-generated information are two areas of growing interest. Teams will explore the potential for the combination of these two technologies to generate new business opportunities.

General Applications:

User-generated content monetization

The world is generating ever increasing volumes of information. Teams will explore mechanisms that enable content producers of any size to improve efficiency and profitability

Prize

The overall winner will receive a prize of 10’000 CHF.
There will also be two runner up prizes of 2’000 CHF each.
The evaluation will be based on the challenges.

In September 2016 Thomson Reuters hosted the first Ethereum Hackathon at Canary Wharf in London.

70 Hackers competed over 2 days in order to win prizes in two challenges: Data Driven Smart Contracts and Ethereum Smart Contract Security. Hack the Valley is a follow-up event with a similar format.
